James F. Thompson 1800-1875 |
James F. Thompson was born in Chatham County , North Carolina, 12 January 1800, the son of Samuel and Margaret (Ward) Thompson. James was united in marriage to Mary "Polly" Mann 27 August 1822 in Chatham Co., North Carolina. Polly was the daughter of Isham and Sally (Patterson) Mann. James and Polly left North Carolina in 1852, stopping off in Marion Co., Indiana, for about a year. In 1854, they removed to Iowa and settled in what is now Section 3, Walnut Twp., Adair Co., Iowa. James F. and Polly were some of the first settlers. They had 11 known children including Andrew Jackson, my direct line ancestor. They lived in a log cabin, north of the house where Ralph and |

Jeanette (Anderson) Kopaska lived in 1985, and owned the land now occupied by Oakwood Cemetery. Polly liked to walk up the hill south of the cabin and sit under the trees in the shade and look at the countryside. Polly died 15 March 1860 and was buried under a tree on top of the hill on the family farm on the land that was later donated for what is now Oakwood Cemetery. As a result, there were free burials for several generations of the Thompson family in the Thompson section of Oakwood Cemetery. James F. died 18 May 1875 and is buried beside Polly. Since both of their gravestones had been broken numerous times, a new stone was set in 2005, incorporating the pieces of the old stones. When counties and townships were laid out in Iowa, Thompson Township in Guthrie County was named after this Thompson family.
