Contractors and Subcontractors

Coordinating Your Remodeling Project

Jane and Dan look over plans.

Jane discusses project plans with the general contractor.

In case you aren't familiar with remodeling terminology, subcontractors are contractors with a specific area of expertise, such as plumbers, electricians, carpenters, and floor covering specialists. A general contractor has a broad knowledge of all aspects of construction and serves to coordinate the project, bringing in the subcontractors when appropriate during the work schedule.

At Bea Day Plumbers we wear two hats. We act as a plumbing subcontractor for the general contractor in the case of kitchen remodels or new house construction. On specific projects (especially bathrooms), we can coordinate the project for you, acting as the general contractor.

Remodeling your bathroom? Bea Day Plumbers is always happy to coordinate the project for you. We recognize that our customers vary in their comfort level regarding remodeling. Some homeowners love to plan in great detail. Others want their bathroom spruced up, but don't want to worry about the particulars; they may have us select their fixtures, subject to their approval. Many customers have neither the time, knowledge, nor energy necessary to coordinate all the subcontractors needed for a more extensive bathroom remodel. As your general contractor, we will call in other specialty contractors, such as carpenters and electricians, who share our philosophy regarding work quality, workplace cleanliness, and attention to detail.

Unless your kitchen remodel is limited to simply changing your sink and faucet to a new style, Bea Day Plumbers would act as a subcontractor. A general contractor manages most kitchen remodels since there is so much cabinetry, countertop, and related work.

Need help choosing a general contractor for a kitchen remodel or an addition? Look to Bea Day to help you find the general contractor that fits your needs. We would be happy to recommend contractors to bid your project. You can also contact the Home Builders Association of Iowa City to access their Remodelors Directory and Buyers Guide.

Want to be your own general contractor? It is possible, but challenging, for homeowners to act as the general contractor for their own projects. This approach is most effective when the homeowner is educated about the remodel process specific to their project. As your own general contractor you need to know when each subcontractor is needed, when inspections must take place, and other vital steps to make a smooth process. You also need good communication skills and lots of patience. Many busy homeowners find it less stressful to hand the general contracting over to a professional than to manage it themselves.
